International Wetland Day Observation by Sacred Heart College, Thevara

Department of Environmental Studies, Sacred Heart College, Thevara observes the International Wetland Day commencing from 2nd February till 29th February 2024. A series of events spanning over a month, in alignment with the theme proposed by the United Nations – 'Wetlands and Human Well being' have been arranged. 

The highlight being addressing the issues surrounding the iconic Vembanad Lake and the broader challenges faced by wetlands and communities in its vicinity. Wetlands are important ecosystems as these are remarkably productive system characterized by the presence of water, either permanently or seasonally, creating a unique habitat that supports a wide variety of flora and fauna. 

The Vembanad Lake, oen considered the backbone of Kerala, supports a significant portion of the State's population. Its deterioration poses not only a direct threat to those dependent on its resources but also impacts the entire population indirectly. This year's observation is strategically focused on creating awareness about the deteriorating state of Vembanad wetland, emphasizing responsible practices, and encouraging active participation in conservation efforts. 

The highlight of our program includes a panel discussion featuring renowned scientists and authorities in the field of Wetlands, aiming to stimulate insightful conversations and awareness. The photography contest envisages to showcase the enchanting beauty and ecological significance of wetlands. This contest is an opportunity to capture the diverse landscapes, flora, and fauna found in wetlands and to promote awareness about the importance of preserving these vital ecosystems.

The awareness campaign envisages to educate the public and raise awareness about the importance of wetlands, their role in biodiversity, and the ecosystem services they provide, to encourage individuals and communities to take tangible steps to protect and conserve wetlands, to make aware and educate the indigenous community mainly Kudumbasree, Harithakarmasena and sherman folk of the State along with local people.
